*Dental Health: Tips and Considerations

First, let me say this: Health comes from healthy living--teeth are no exception to this rule!
If you take good care of your health, your teeth should hold up well; just like any other part of your body. Unless you have had a trauma to your mouth, if you have teeth problems, this is most likely a symptom of other underlying health problems. (For example, a poor functioning thyroid.)
Considerations:
The true cause of cavities:
The most widely accepted cause of cavities is that they are caused by bacteria. It is believed by many that tooth decay occurs when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches) are frequently left on the teeth, bacteria that live in the mouth feed on these foods and produce an acid as a result. Over a period of time, these acids can destroy tooth enamel and result in tooth decay. This theory has been around since the late 1800's. However, this theory tends to be flawed.
As with other aspects of disease, bacteria are often not the cause of a disease, but rather accompany the problem (but then are erroneously blamed for causing the problem). Even the originator of this theory of tooth decay (W.D. Miller) didn't believe bacterial were the true cause of tooth decay, but rather a part of the decay process. This would make sense. Why? Bacteria would be a part of the decay process, just as they are everywhere else in the body. Bacteria are feeders. Their role is to breakdown and remove dead, or rotting materials. The mouth is no exception. You can't get rid of bacteria completely. They are everywhere and they have role to play in life. If bacteria were the true cause of tooth decay, then everybody's teeth would have fallen out long ago. Also, shouldn't these acid producing bacteria be able to easily be neutralized by our alkaline saliva (human saliva should be alkaline)? Just something else to consider. Also, many primitive people eat diets high in carbohydrate foods, and yet have no tooth decay.
Tooth decay is supposedly also an infectious disease. This seems flawed also, for the following reasons: First, antibiotics that kill bacteria don't appear to stop tooth decay. Second, people don't appear to develop antibodies to tooth decay. Also, antibacterial oral products have not effectively been shown to prevent tooth decay. And, if one does have tooth decay, they don't appear to combat it well unless they treat the true underlying cause.
So, what is the real cause of tooth decay? A poor diet and lifestyle. Again, health comes from healthful living. So, when one's diet and lifestyle are such that the body's nerves and glands start to break down, the proper messages are not being sent to the right places to prevent tooth decay. For example, if a part of the brain called the hypothalmus doesn't tell the parotid gland (salivary gland) to secrete it's remineralizing fluid, the teeth become weak and start breaking down, and eventually if not corrected will lead to tooth decay.
The body's pH is also an important aspect of health. When the body becomes overly acidic in it's pH, base minerals, such as calcium, magnesium and others may be then leached out of the bones, teeth, and connective tissues to offset the acidity. So, it's important to keep the body more alkaline. How does one do this? By eating a diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, breathing correctly, sunshine, fresh air, clean water, ample rest and sleep and cultivating loving relationships. Sound familiar? If you have been reading my newsletters and blog posts for awhile, it should sound familiar. These are the factors I often discuss that bring about optimal health and well-being.
Tips:
-
If you need to visit a dentist, find one that uses a holistic approach. There are dentists who practice what is called "whole body dentistry". This means they consider the whole body, not just the tooth (symptoms) when treating your teeth. You should approach your own tooth care the same way.
-
Sometimes, poor dentistry needs to be fixed by good dentistry. Ask around and find a good dental professional in your area who will do the job right (and one time).
-
Avoid putting any metals in your mouth, especially silver fillings (mercury amalgams), which are highly toxic and create many severe health problems for people. When mercury (silver fillings) first made it's way onto the scene, they were considered dangerous and the people who put them in other peoples' mouths were referred to as "quacks." The fact that despite the mounds of evidence that show these type of filing materials are not safe, they continue to be used, which is a shame. Mercury is a toxic material and it belongs nowhere in the body, especially right near your brain! Metals in the mouth also create a "battery effect," which disrupts the body's normal electrical currents and impairs normal tooth physiology.
-
If you do already have silver fillings (mercury amalgams) and choose to have them removed, then there is a safe and proper protocol to follow! Do NOT just let anybody replace these for you. This can lead to serious problems if not removed correctly. Some resources for you: International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (www.iaomt.org), The Holistic Dental Association (www.holisticdental.org), Hal Huggins Trained Dentists (www.hugginsappliedhealing.com).
-
Using commercial fluoride is highly questionable. Fluoride is a very toxic substance (and appears to be a health scam). This includes the fluoride that is in drinking water and most tooth care products. Fluoride can actually weaken and pit your teeth and bones. Go to for more info>>> http://www.fluoridealert.org/
-
Many commercial tooth cleaning or whitening products are toxic and not recommended. Make sure you research and know what exactly you are putting into your body. Normal tooth color is not stark white.
-
Get a second or even third opinion. Many times, procedures that are recommended may not be needed, such as root canals (which can be very dangerous), braces, fillings, implants, etc. Know all your options. For example, if you absolutely need a crown, there are now metal-free crowns available and some can even be put in that same day right at the dentist's office. Some filling materials are better than others. You can get a bio-compatibility test done to help determine what is right for you.
- If you need to go to a dentist or dental professional, then go! Don't be too proud, or too stubborn. This may be a very expensive or painful lesson. The mouth is an important part of the body. Each tooth is vital for overall health. If you need one fixed, get it fixed, but do it right.
- Practice good oral hygiene habits daily. Some gentle brushing (not across the gums), flossing, blotting and/or oral irrigating appear to be good practices. Swishing for a couple of minutes with some aluminum-free baking soda mixed in water or a good herbal tooth powder can help keep your mouth clean as well.

*Great Pose for Health & Healing

This exercise is called: "Viparita Karani" (pronounced: vip-par-ee-tah car-AHN-ee) and it can have many benefits including: general relaxation and stress reduction, posture management, spinal traction and decompression, pain and swelling management, improved digestive and reproductive functioning, toning and strengthening of the trunk and extremities, and more.
Viparita = turned around, reversed, inverted
Karani = doing, making, action
For your support you'll need one or two thickly folded blankets or a firm round bolster. You'll also need to rest your legs vertically (or nearly so) on a wall or other upright support.
Before performing the pose, determine two things about your support: its height and its distance from the wall. If you're stiffer, the support should be lower and placed farther from the wall; if you're more flexible, use a higher support that is closer to the wall. Your distance from the wall also depends on your height: if you're shorter move closer to the wall, if taller move farther from the wall. Experiment with the position of your support until you find the placement that works for you.
Your sitting bones don't need to be right against the wall, but they should be dipping down into the space between the support and the wall. Check that the front of your torso gently arches from the pelvis to the top of the shoulders. If your low back is normally already arched, you may want to place the support lower under your buttocks to help tilt your pelvis backward. If the front of your torso seems flat, then you've probably slipped a bit off the support. Bend your knees, press your feet into the wall and lift your pelvis off the support a few inches, tuck the support a little higher up under your pelvis, then lower your pelvis onto the support again.
Lift and release the base of your skull away from the back of your neck and soften your throat. Don't push your chin against your sternum; instead let your sternum lift toward the chin. Take a small roll (made from a towel for example) under your neck if the cervical spine feels flat. Open your shoulder blades away from the spine and release your hands and arms out to your sides, palms up.
Keep your legs relatively firm, just enough to hold them vertically in place. Release the heads of the thigh bones and the weight of your belly deeply into your torso, toward the back of the pelvis. Soften your eyes and turn them down to look into your heart.
Stay in this pose anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. Be sure not to twist off the support when coming out. Instead, slide off the support onto the floor before turning to the side. You can also bend your knees and push your feet against the wall to lift your pelvis off the support. Then slide the support to one side, lower your pelvis to the floor, and turn to the side. Stay on your side for a few breaths, and come up to sitting with an exhalation.
*Note: Before doing this exercise, you should consult with a qualified healthcare professional to help determine if this exercise is right for you.

Did you know?

Most of the sunlight that comes into the body enters through the eyes, and only a small portion through the skin. Considering what you have just learned, would wearing sunglasses be a great idea? The eyes are a light-processing organ. It doesn't make sense to cover them up with sunglasses. Yeah, but you want to look cool, right? Well, I don't know about you, but I don't think looking sick looks cool. Other than wearing them for safety reasons, sunglasses should be avoided. Getting enough sunlight on your face in the wintertime can do you much good regarding maintaining vitamin D levels and overall health since the majority of light enters through the eyes. You don't need to look at the sun directly, the light just needs to come into your eyes.
We'll be getting plenty of sunshine and great food on my next>>> RAW-habilitation Retreat!

*Q & A with Dr. SAM
Question: "T.B" asks: "What are your thoughts on using hormone replacement therapy?"
Answer: I've answered this in the past, but would be happy to answer it again. I highly recommend staying away from using HRT. Your body is constantly trying to seek a happy balance to maintain its own well-being and survival. Hormones (as well as many other biochemicals) will be replaced automatically by the body, IF the body is treated correctly. That is, if you are willing to give your body the proper care and things it needs to replace it's own hormones. Artificial hormone replacement therapy can lead to way more problems that it can solve. As the old saying goes: "It's not wise to fool with Mother Nature."A better approach then trying to replace the hormones is to replace the poor health habits or behaviors that lead to a decrease in glandular dysfunction and low hormone production. We should seek to regenerate weak organs, not treat the symptoms of weak organs.
Thanks for your question.
