*Get Yourself a Date!

Dates

If you have never eaten a date before, what's wrong with you? Just kidding. Seriously though, dates are one of my favorite fruits. They are so rich and delicious. You can just eat them plain. You can mix them with a bit of water and carob and make a chocolate-like sauce that you can drizzle over other fruits. SOOO good. You can also mix them with bananas and make a nice thick fruit shake. Or, you can just pop them in the freezer for a delicious desert treat. Once frozen, many dates take on a caramel-like texture and taste.

Dates have been considered a staple food in the Middle East for thousands of years. The name 'date' comes from the Greek word for 'finger' (dáktulos), because of the fruit's elongated shape. Dates can be oval-cylindrical, and they are usually about 3-7 cm long, and 2-3 cm wide. When they are not ripe, they could be bright red to bright yellow in color, depending on the variety. When ripe, many dates are usually dark brown or tan (again, depending on the variety). Fresh dates often contain a single seed that is approx 2-2.5 cm long and 6-8 mm thick. You should NOT eat the seed. Thre are many types of dates grown throughout the world. The 3 main cultivar groups of dates that exist are: soft (ex. 'Barhee', 'Halawy', 'Khadrawy', 'Medjool'), semi-dry (ex. 'Dayri', 'Deglet Noor', 'Zahdi'), and dry (ex. 'Thoory'). The type of fruit depends on the sugar content it contains (glucose, fructose and sucrose).

Dates are a great source of carbohydrates and are rich in many great vitamins and trace minerals. AND, THEY TASTE GOOD too! If you have never tried a date, then you are in for a treat. However, I would suggest that you find yourself some good fresh soft or semi-dry dates from a local health food store. The more fresh (moist) they are, the better your experience will probably be.

*Q & A with Dr. SAM

Dr. SAM-new bio pic

Question: "Q.V" asks:  "What are your thoughts on rebouding?"

Answer: I think that reboudning (bouncing on a mini trampoline) can be a good form of exercise. However, like other forms of exercise, this really depends on one thing--whether or not one actually does it! I have found that so many people are looking for the magical piece of equipment to help improve their health. The magic is in the doing, not the method of exercise.

However, with that being said, I'm a fan of rebounding because: it's fun, it's safe (if done correctly), it's effective, and it's something that people can often stay committed to. It can help tone the body, and improve strength, balance, mobility and immune function. If you plan to purchase a rebounder, then a good one will usually cost between $175-$300. If you buy a cheap $40 rebounder, you will probably not be too happy with it; and therefore, you won't use it. You can find more here>>>Rebounders

Thanks for your question.
