hemp*History of Hemp: Did you know?

Let me first say that I do not smoke marijuana or hemp (and I do NOT advocate doing so). Marijuana and hemp are not the same thing. They look similar in appearacne and come from the same plant species, but different varieties. Marijuana is high in THC (a psychoactive chemical) and hemp is not. For one to receive a psychoactive dose from hemp, it would require a person to power-smoke 10-12 hemp cigarettes in an extremely short period of time. This would be very hard to do and unappealing.

Now that's out of the way, let's talk about why hemp is a good thing. Hemp is one of the most versatile crops in the plant kingdom (including food, paper, fuel, oil, textiles, housing and many other things). Our early forefathers took a large interest in hemp (with George Washington being one of the largest hemp farmers in he world during the late 1700′s). Thomas Jefferson was said to have called on farmers to: "plant hemp seed, not tobacco". Hemp was even legal tender for almost 200 years in the United States. That's right, you could even pay your taxes with hemp! However, In the late 1800′s hemp production slipped due to a lack of processing technology, and paper production began using cheaper trees and cotton.

In a 1938 article entitled: "New Billion Dollar Crop," Popular Mechanics magazine reported on  new hemp harvesting technology being developed by International Harvester. However, some people had plans to make this plant illegal for farmers to cultivate. There were three men in particular, Henry J. Anslinger, Lammont DuPont, and William Randolph Hearst. Anslinger was the head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. DuPont and Hearst were the owners of the largest chemical company and newspaper, respectively.

Why might these men have wanted hemp to be made illegal?

Well....trees had become the number one paper source during that time. William Hearst, in addition to owning a nationwide chain of newspapers, also owned the timber used to make them. The potential new threat of cheap hemp meant that trees would no longer be the cheapest source of paper. So, Hearst used his newspapers to launch a campaign against hemp. However, he focused on the byproduct instead (marijuana),  which resulted in "Yellow Journalism". DuPont had patented the process for producing synthetic nylon from oil and coal. He had also developed a new improved sulfate process to make paper from wood pulp. If DuPont would have had to compete against environmentally-friendly hemp products, his business would have suffered. DuPont's banker at the time (Andrew Mellon) happened to be Secretary of the Treasury under Herbert Hoover. Mellon had a nephew-in-law, Henry Anslinger, who had the Marijuana Tax Law of 1937 passed.

Due to the overall similarity in appearance between hemp and marijuana, the entire Cannabis family was made illegal. Hemp did make a brief resurgence during World War II. The U.S. Department of Agriculture released the short film "Hemp For Victory" encouraging all farmers to grow hemp for the war effort. However, it went back to its illegal standing after the war.

*What's the big deal?

bigdeal3

I have to solve problems clinically on a daily basis. I'm always being a 'health detective' and discovering why a patient or client is not getting optimal healing results. Here is the latest one. Now, this one was a tough one. The patient is post-op for his shoulder for approximately one month and is complaining of not sleeping well at night. So, I go through the usual exploratory process (chain-of-health) with him. Well.... we stopped at the first link in the chain-of-health, which is food. Here is what he was eating just prior to bedtime:

A glass of milk (most likely from a cow injected with bovine growth-hormone, steroids, and antibiotics); and a snack containing: sugar, corn syrup, water, enriched bleached flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin b1), riboflavin (vitamin b2), folic acid), partially hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oil with TBHQ to preserve flavor, dextrose, palm and palm kernel oil, cocoa, colors( caramel color, red 40), soybean oil, eggs, leavening(baking soda, sodium aluminum phosphate), whey (milk), emulsifiers (sorbitan monostearate, polysorbate 60, soy lecithin, mono- and diglycerides, polyglycerol esters of fatty acids), salt, corn starch, sorbic acid, egg whites, natural and artificial flavors, citric acid

Now, I don't know about you, but I'm betting this little nutritional package is not conducive to a good night's sleep. When I tried to explain this to the patient, his response was: "What's the big deal?" Well, what if I rephrase it this way: Do you really expect to get a good night's sleep after poisoning yourself just prior to going bed? Enough said!

Take away message: In every healing situation, you can either support your body's healing efforts by supplying it with it's true needs, or you can impair your healing efforts by doing the opposite. Choice is yours.

A Good Raw Food Recipe

"Sweet n Salty Celery Slaw"

Ingredients (organic, non-GMO preferred):

  • 1 bunch of celery (approx 1 lb)
  • 8 pitted medjool dates
  • a dash of cinnamon (ceylon preferred)

Directions:

Dice 2/3 of the celery, blend remaining celery with the dates and cinnamon. Mix well and serve. Also works well with raisins in place of dates, or with a small handful of raisins or chopped dates mixed in. Also great with cucumber noodles. Optional: Try using fennel in place of part of celery to add a licorice flavor treat!

*Q & A with Dr. SAM

Dr. SAM-new bio pic

Question: "B.J" asks:  "Is yoga a good way to improve my flexibility?"

Answer: That depends.Yoga could help you improve your flexibility. However, yoga should not be equated with flexibility. Yoga is so much more than that. Besides, yoga often demonstrates good flexibility, as opposed to developing it. In other words, you may have to do some remedial work (a stretching program) first, before you can engage in a yoga program and get the benefits.

You really need to determine why you are not flexible? Is it just from a lack of movement and exercise, a poor diet, structural misalignments and nervous system dysfunction, improper breathing habits, dehydration and/or demineralization, a toxic body (poor overall health)? Once the cause is identified and addressed correctly, your flexibility should improve significantly.

Thanks for your question.
