Another movie this year worth seeing is called: "Forks Over Knives."
FORKS OVER KNIVES examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the so-called "diseases of affluence" that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods. The major storyline in the film traces the personal journeys of a pair of pioneering yet under-appreciated researchers, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn.

*Coffee- Healthy or More Hype?
There has been much buzz (no pun intended) lately about the "health effects" of coffee, especially as it pertains to lowering one's risk of breast or prostate cancer by up to 30-60% depending on how much coffee is consumed. Researchers have supposedly found some chemicals (that act as antioxidants, decrease inflammation, and regulate insulin) in coffee that are beneficial to health. Well.. there is a newsflash-- beneficial compounds in plant foods. Wow, what a concept?
HOWEVER, before you get all excited and start chugging down a bunch of this miracle liquid, let's put some things in perspective. Coffee is a highly sprayed crop. Yes, the same stuff you may be complaining about paying $4+ per gallon for may be contained in your cup of joe. Petro-based chemicals are a big part of the pesticide industry. Most people are not drinking organic coffee.
The issue of caffeine--a strong addictive drug that creates significant heart and adrenal stress and may lead to nervousness and anxiety problems. And, for those that are not aware, "de-caff coffee" STILL has caffeine in it (and many toxic chemicals that were used in the decaff process.) Coffee is a strong diuretic and and can create mineral and vitamin deficiencies as well as organ stress in the body as well.
Bottom line: Coffee may contain some beneficial nutrients. BUT, these same nutrients can be found in so many other fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds, and other plant-based whole foods--without the potential negative side effects.
Oh yeah... there are many other safe and natural ways to reduce your risk of cancer by much greater than 60%. Besides eating a plant-based diet rich in organic fruits and veggies, get more sleep, eat better, exercise daily, drink and bathe in clean water, get ample sunshine on all parts of your body daily, breathe correctly, don't pollute your body, home and working environment, and cultivate loving relationships in your life. It's really that simple! (We are not suffering from a pink-ribbon deficiency).

A Good Raw Food Recipe
Salsa Wraps
Ingredients:
6-10 large leafs of romaine lettuce or collards
1/2-1 lb of sprouts (clover, sunflower, buckwheat lettuce)
2-3 roma tomatoes
1 bunch of cilantro
1/2-1 avocado (med-large)
lime to taste
Directions:
Dice tomatoes, cilantro and avocado and mix all together well (making a chunky salsa mix). Spread sprouts evenly in the middle of each of the romaine or collard leafs. Top with your chunky salsa mix, and add lime to taste. Wrap up each leaf and enjoy. Note: Low Fat Version: Great with 1 mango or some pineapple in place of the avocado. You can try with any number of veggies. Have fun experimenting with this one.

*Q & A with Dr. SAM
Question: O.J. asks: "I sit for long periods of time at work on the computer. I've started developing some neck pain and numbness in my right arm. Do you have any suggestions?
Answer: Without a proper assessment, it's hard to provide you specific advice. However, in general, STOP SITTING if possible. Prolonged sitting (especially combined with poor breathing) will often promote poor posture, aches and pains and many other health problems. I would change your work station to standing if you can.
If you are going to stand up, you should adjust your keyboard so that is at approximately waist level and the middle of your monitor at approximately eye level. If you just try to stand up in the work station you currently have, you will most likely find out very quickly that this will not be conducive to maintaining good posture or work productivity.
I would highly recommend getting to a good physical therapist or qualified health practitioner who can help you resolve your current condition. If you are ever in the Atlanta area, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thanks for your question.
